Well – here we are – 40 weeks! We’re now officially ‘overdue’.
According to the date we were given, which was December 19th, that makes us 40+1. I honestly didn’t expect to make it to 40 weeks. I just had a feeling that once we finished work and my body relaxed our baby would be on her way. Obviously – I was wrong! Apparently the baby is now the size of a pumpkin and definitely feels that way! She is heavy and the waddle has kind of become an awkward sway from side to side.
The last few weeks have been an interesting change. We started maternity leave two weeks ago which has been amazing! The chance to just stop and slow down had been a wonderful change of pace. I’ve loved nesting, I have been through the whole house. Wardrobes have been organised, the cellar has been re-arranged and kitchen cupboards have been scrubbed. I got to the point this week where I said, ‘I have nothing left to do’ and I meant it!
So I sat down at my piano and just relaxed. Which has been so needed!
I’ve also become absorbed into hypnobirthing. I have to be honest, I was rather sceptical about hypnobirthing. I thought it was all going to be a little bit ‘hippy’ to breathe the baby out. However, a friend of mine recommended The Positive Birth Company and their online course and I have loved it! It’s a series of online videos that go through the science of birth, the different stages of labour and understanding your breathing. The have lots of positive affirmations to remind yourself that you can do this and there is no reason to fear labour. The videos are positive, educational and presented in such an approachable way – I cannot recommend them enough if you are interested in hypnobirthing or worried about birth.
It’s a strange time of year to be waiting for a baby to arrive. The closer we get to Christmas the more we’re not sure if we want her to arrive or not. It would be lovely to have her home for Christmas, but being in hospital for Christmas would be awful. You just can’t plan these things, and for someone like me, who is a tad over organised to say the least, the not knowing is tough!
I’ve started reading ‘The Wonder Weeks’ book this week. I downloaded the app but you can’t beat a real book. Mike’s lovely sister Jen bought me it as a Christmas gift and I really wanted to read it so I was thrilled to have the chance to start it. It’s been recommended by so many people and the advice seems spot on.
We had our 40 week midwife appointment today and baby seems to be measuring slightly smaller than at 38 weeks. I was hoping we might get a sweep today but because of this – no such luck! There are lots of reasons we might be measuring smaller so we’re trying not to over think it and we’ll see what tomorrow brings!
I fully believe due dates aren’t exactly accurate. It is more of a ‘birth-due-date-window’, so she’ll come when she’s ready. Gotta keep those oxytocin levels up right?
Happy 40 weeks to us!
